Best hybrid classes imo would be:
- anything + commander
- Warrior -> Scout aka Assassin (level 4 unit)
- Scout -> Warrior aka Adventurer (level 4 unit)
- Wizard -> Scout aka Druid (level 4 unit & root ranged attack I believe?)

My priorities for the first hero are to expand territories, get access to resources and complete those crystal missions.
Clearing all the sites might be a waste of time? Also it's good to leave some for your secondary heroes & they can do some crystal missions as well later.

Your reference guide is also more up to date than the eadoropedia. For instance Emerald ring is +1/+1 to attacks & eadoropedia says +2/+2.

Hopefully that put content ahead of flashy graphics.
With the 3D look and feel I othen have trouble differentiating between plains and hills, but maybe it's just me. I assume the # tiles with a couple of trees are forest?

That's what I changed it to (copy and paste beginner <-> overlord, skilled <-> lord etc apart from corruption which doesn't affect AI).
As I said - it was just one game. 1 "competent" local lord & 2 astral masters set to "master". Are you sure the AI follows this file in the campaign? Doh-Gor "master" wiped the map. He wasn't even getting a full benefit from choosing Strategist.
I suppose I can do a better test and change the exp mod to 1000 for every difficulty level except expert and see what happens? Worth a try?

I tried to inverse the difficulties in the difficulty.var file, but it didn't make any difference (although I've only tried one game). A master AI just wiped out the other 2 opponents and has come for me. Lvl 30 Strategist with several lvl 30 beserkers and the rest regular thugs. He's not impossible to beat, but it's only turn 57 - and will almost certainly beat me. This normal?

Hey, I really like playing through the campaign (never finished it). I play on expert, and about halfway during the campaign maps, where the other masters are set to "Master" difficulty I'm finding it incredibly hard to win these levels. I've tried changing all difficulty levels in difficulty.var file to be the same (expert) but the AI still cuts through the map with their insane heroes in no time at all. Do the AI opponents follow what's in difficulty.var or is this just for humans?

I believe my options are:
1. Have a good shard & hope that I can get to level >15 before meeting the enemy.
2. Use every tactic in the book, like bloody hand rituals.
3. Revert to the last version where the AI wasn't godly. I think this was 2.50d.
I think the third option is the best, but it's a real shame to lose all of the improvements in latter versions.

Am I the only one still playing the campaign? I'd personally like to be able to set the AI opponents to expert level for good (among other things) but I can only change my own, and I don't want to play on the easy levels.
I know this crosses over with AI problems in general, but I can handle Expert AI opponents - just not "smarter/cheatier" AI levels.
What are other people doing?

Yep - this works! I'm trying to think of the "fairest" way to cheat. It would be great if you could set the AI difficulties back to Expert, to reduce the chance of an AI mega-hero, though keeping things fair.
Maybe for each AI level above Expert give yourself a chunk of gold at the start?

I like Commanders but find Leadership to be very weak. Maybe I underestimate the XP gain though. I would choose another - probably defense or resilience. I don't really mind the random skills either so just use the default exe.
Just out of curiosity - does the fixed skills also benefit the AI players?

A better idea (imo) would be to recruit from a "pool" of heroes. You could pick the hero who's face & skill you like. If the AI got them then they'd be unavailable for you. I realise this is a lot of work though.
