Exploration only affects income by increasing it by 2 upon completion of the province exploration up to 100%. But it is also related in the way that low percentage stops the growth of population which is highly important for sufficient income.
About the population-exploration limitations:

The population's mood also affects the income, it can be easily seen when the income is high and the mood changes. The better the mood, the higher is the income.
Certain special places in the province may affect income in gold and/or magic crystals (they are not gems, it it GOG's wrong translation. Gem mine is a special place in the hills that increases the income of gold by 8, like a silver mine or a gold mine, and has completely nothing to do with the crystals), as well as change the population's mood. At high levels of income from the province the mood is the main changing factor of the income from it.
Certain rituals do affect the income and/or the mood, or even population (yeah, the strongest necromancers' ritual comes to mind).
Buildings in the provinces affect the income too, some of which may give more income depending on the presence of a certain resource in the province they are built in.
Units that have the "Marauder" ability lower the income of the province they are in.
Also, the income increase from castle buildings counts as income from the castle, not the provinces.
The race affects the income highly, too.
The last, but not the least is that the daily events can change all the factors stated above, they can construct certain buildings, destroy buildings, decrease/increase population, temporarily change the mood, permanently increase/decrease the income.
