This is the thread to report all game and text related errors and bugs for the English v2.x release of New Horizons mod v14.0920.

Use this thread only for errors that affect gameplay, or when text displayed somewhere in the game is either wrong or not displaying properly:

Are there funny characters in the text that shouldn't be there?
Does a title not fit with the text underneath it?
Does a text or a title clearly show wrong information or nothing at all?
You get the idea! Report these cases here...

There shouldn't be any real game-playing bugs in it, other than possibly a tiny few that were already present in the Russian release.
Most potential bugs in this English version will be text-based, and will have found their way in through the translation process.

Don't report any language-based errors here, like spelling, grammar, missing characters and term suggestions.
These are not crucial and will slowly be corrected by me in subsequent versions as I discover them while playing.
If they disturb you however, feel free to report them in the original ongoing translation thread.

Thanks, kid, that was a sneaky one. There were two bugs in ability.txt, the first one was an added # at no. 234 and then a missing # at 304, so all abilities I checked were working fine, with the exception of the ones between 234 and 304, among them the ones you listed. I've placed a patch in the release thread. Thanks a lot!

FYI, bavarian kid, and hopefully you won't discover any more of these errors Smile but if you do, you only ever need to show me the lowest and highest number you see in the windows. All the screenshots of the faulty ability texts fall within the range I mentioned two posts up, between 234 and 273. It will save you time having to upload all the images. Smile

Several descriptions in medal.txt are incorrect

"Increases upkeep by +5 gold." The +5 is redundant (and also inconsistent with "Increases morale by 6")

/2 Medal for Resilience = forgot defense
/3 Order of the Marksman = the actual names are Precise Shot and Ranged Attack (if you didn't change them)
/5 Medal for Zeal = wrong upkeep
/6 Mercenary Badge (I think my translation is better)
/11 Medal for Agility = wrong upkeep, ranged defense

IMHO, this file should be automatically generated from parsing medal.var

Boon, thank you for your extensive reporting. I will look into all these separate issues one by one, but to comment on some of them in a general way:

On the UTF BOM: the only way I could get my translation program to read cyrillic characters and match up the TM in the alignment process, was to convert all files to UTF with a BOM. When translated, I then export the files as plain text again into Windows Cyrillic 1251. At first I thought this wouldn't make a difference, so I used the default export setting, and I think for many files it doesn't matter, but as you mention yourself, in all English text with guillemets and apostrophies, a B and a question mark get added respectively. So I'll have a look at the diplomacy files to see if they need to be re-issued.

On the "task" for "quest" and the "drow" and some other things: these are not "my" translations. In fact, when I spotted these, I changed quite a few tasks into quests and drow into dark elves or Alvari, but you must remember that most of the text in this release was not actually translated by me, but was either already part of vanilla Eador, or was translated that way by Drakon and his team. I didn't go through all of the text that was automatically taken over from previous translations, as that would have taken too long. Only now, while playing it, do I make notes of things that could be improved and I change those. So thanks for your tips.

About the empty lines and slashes: I decided to translate all the units completely, but with some files, where Drakon had already decided to reduce the amount of text to the bare essential and skip the funny quotes, I stuck with his version. But because the translation then has much less sentences than the original, the alignment program had troubles allocating language pairs, so in order to make sure that next time these are also automatically translated, I translated the last few sentences of an entry with a slash. These don't show up in the game.

And about changing (often shortening) certain sentences, that's indeed about fitting a text into a frame. I'd rather have a sentence that doesn't flow as well, than a sentence part of which is not visible at all. That can't be helped. I noticed that English just takes up much more space than Russian does, and again, some of these were older translations.

I'm sure it'll be absolutely perfect eventually, and because I also insert each little change into the translation database, all of it will come out exactly like that in future versions.

See above, the slashes don't appear in game, and only serve the purpose of ensuring these entries will be automatically translated next time. The translation software doesn't allow a translation unit to be empty, so I had to fill it with at least one character, hence one slash per superfluous sentence.

I didn't, but for some strange reason, the software did. I suspect what happened, but too complicated to explain. Fixed it.

This was all automatic, but in skill.txt Мастер жезла is translated as "Wand Master" and Выстрел жезла as "Wand Firing". In ability.txt and ability_num.var #96 it is called something different again, Владение жезлом, which was translated as "Wand Mastery", but you're right, it would make more sense to use "Wand Firing" here as well, so I've changed that.

Yes, I had to change that text to fit the frame. I've now changed it to "Provides more opportunities at negotiations."

Hmmm, one of those strange things happening while converting from and to different character encoding, I assume. Thanks, fixed that.

It didn't matter much in this case, that's why I hadn't spotted it. It was an alignment issue that in other cases have led to a more serious error. Fixed it.

I agree. Must have been another alignment issue that I had to fix by just translating the missing bit on the spot. Changed it back.

Thank you very much, Boon, for finding and reporting all of these errors. There's something to be said for file comparison and parsing, a different kind of automation than I've used, but obviously very useful.

medal.var provides the definitive numbers.

/11 Sorry, I read the diff backwards! I had it wrong, and you had it right...

Once you post the next patch, I'm considering uploading var and Text to github, so that anyone can easily track modifications and share improvements (open source development).

I'm not a developer, although I'm not a complete newbie either. When I was young Sad I learned Pascal at college and learned Basic for fun on a Sinclair Spectrum. Now you should be able to deduct my age. Smile And later in life I taught myself PHP and created my own website practically from scratch. Still, that was all just dabbling, and I have no experience with github, so I wonder how that would work, also in combination with the use of my translation database. I guess they would have to be maintained separately in parallell then? Will post patch 2.06 later today. Discovered a few more minor errors that should be fixed, and I guess we'll keep on discovering small glitches in the next few weeks, as the game is being played and all events and level ups are being experienced.

Thanks so much for this release! A couple comments from playing 2.04:

In the "dragonroot" random event dialog, when I select "plow the land", I don't see any further dialog text. Previously I would get a message about the province income increasing by X amount per turn. And I think the province income is not increasing.

An old bug in the texts: in the casino, when you go to the exchanger, you are asked "What do you want to exchange?", but really the question should be "What do you want to receive?" That is, if you answer the question "gold", then you get asked how many gems you want to exchange into gold. Alternatively you could swap the answers "gold" and "gems" and leave the question as is.
